Single-Vehicle Crashes into Avalon Mall Parking Structure; Causes Substantial Damage
On Saturday night (Nov. 15), just before 11:30 p.m., firefighters with the St. John’s Regional Fire Department (SJRFD), along with personnel from the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC) and NL Health Services (NLHS), responded to a reported vehicle fire at the outdoor Avalon Mall Parking Garage on O’Leary Avenue, adjacent to the Avalon Mall.
Fire crews were first to arrive and, upon investigation, found a single vehicle that had crashed into the parking garage structure on the third floor. The vehicle had sustained extensive damage and was smoking as crews reached the scene. Firefighters, with the assistance of Avalon Mall security officers, used fire extinguishers to contain the smoke and ensure the vehicle did not ignite.
RNC officers secured the crash site with police tape as a large crowd gathered on the third floor. Police remained on scene for an hour or more as they worked on a plan to remove the vehicle from the third level. A tow truck was unable to access the area, and the parking garage structure near the entrance to the skywalk had sustained substantial damage from the collision.
There were no serious injuries reported.
