Fire Prevention Week 2026 gets underway from October 4th and runs through October 12th, with the St. John’s Regional Fire Department hosting an open house and other events as part of the week-long focus on fire safety.

The department is currently welcoming the public to SJRFD West End Fire Station, located at 215 Blackmarsh Road, today from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

The department is also reminding residents about the importance of properly charging electronic devices, particularly those powered by rechargeable lithium-ion batteries.

Phones, tablets, power tools and e-scooters all use these batteries, which can catch fire or explode if they are not charged properly.

Residents are encouraged to use chargers supplied with their devices or those approved by the manufacturer. Devices should be charged on a desk or table rather than on a bed, couch or pillow.

The department also advises unplugging a device if it becomes hot or begins to swell. Larger items, including e-scooters and tools, should be charged outdoors and kept away from exits.

The St. John’s Regional Fire Department is hosting several events throughout Fire Prevention Week. Including an event located at the Paul Reynolds Community Centre located at 35 Carrick Drive in St. John’s. The event is from 6pm to 8pm.
