COMMUNITY MOURNS TWO LIVES LOST NEAR NAIN N.L.

The Mushuau Innu First Nation is mourning the loss of two community members following a tragic accident on the water near Nain, Newfoundland and Labrador.
According to the First Nation, the two members lost their lives on Sunday, October 4, 2026.
The Mushuau Innu First Nation extended its condolences to the families and loved ones of those who died, while expressing gratitude to emergency responders and support teams who assisted in locating the victims and bringing them back to Nain.
The First Nation also thanked those entrusted with the care of the deceased until they can be brought home, as well as those who have reached out with condolences and offers of support.
“This tragedy has had, and will continue to have, a profound impact on our community,” the First Nation said.
The Mushuau Innu First Nation is asking the public to avoid speculation and online discussion surrounding the incident, citing the privacy and feelings of the families and everyone affected.
Out of respect for the Piwas and Rich families, the Band Office in Natuashish will be closed on Monday, October 5. The Finance Office in Happy Valley-Goose Bay will remain open.
