A 36-year-old man is facing multiple charges after police say a stolen vehicle struck an RNC vehicle during an incident Tuesday morning.

At approximately 8:50 a.m. on October 6th, officers with the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary’s Operational Patrol Services attempted to stop a four-door red Honda Civic in the area of Blackmarsh Road.

The driver refused to stop. Police did not pursue the vehicle due to public safety concerns but continued to monitor it from a distance.

The vehicle was later observed on the Team Gushue Highway on-ramp from the George’s Pond Road overpass, where the driver was travelling in the wrong direction. The vehicle was heading northbound in the southbound direction on the Team Gushue Highway ramp toward George’s Pond Road.

The driver stopped and began accelerating backwards, striking a police vehicle.

Officers approached the stationary vehicle, but the driver refused to exit. Police then forced entry into the vehicle and arrested the male driver.

The female passenger attempted to flee on foot but was apprehended following a foot pursuit. She was observed being assessed by NL Health Services paramedics before being transported from the scene by ambulance.

The RNC’s Police Dog Services also attended the scene.

Through the investigation, police determined the vehicle had been reported stolen.

The 36-year-old male was conveyed to Provincial Court and charged with dangerous operation of a conveyance, resisting arrest, assaulting a peace officer, possessing property obtained by crime, and flight from a peace officer.

Police seized the vehicle and issued numerous summary offence tickets.

The 31-year-old female was released from police custody with a future court date. She is facing charges of possessing property obtained by crime and resisting arrest.
