A 41-year-old Massey Drive man has been arrested after police found a firearm improperly stored in plain view on an unattended off-road vehicle near Pinchgut Lake.

The RNC says officers responded to the Gull Pond Road area at approximately 10:30 a.m. Tuesday after receiving a report involving a firearm.

RNC Operational Patrol Services, with assistance from the Provincial Government’s Resource Enforcement Division, located an unoccupied off-road vehicle on a public trail near the Trans-Canada Highway.

Police say the vehicle was transporting a firearm that was improperly stored and left in plain view.

The owner was identified and later arrested for careless storage of a firearm. The firearm was seized, and the man is expected to appear in court at a later date.

The investigation remains ongoing, and police say additional charges are anticipated.

With hunting season underway, the RNC is reminding hunters to keep firearms unloaded when not in use or being transported, never leave firearms unattended, wear highly visible clothing, follow licensing and hunting regulations, carry reliable communications, and let someone know where they are going and when they expect to return.

Police also remind hunters to know their target and surroundings, take their time and stay alert.
